Biotechnology:
- As the etymology of its name implies, biotechnology is the field of study that looks at the practical industrial applications of living things.
- An example of biotechnology is the use of the fermentation reaction in yeast to make beer and other alcoholic drinks. Another example is the use of carbon dioxide produced by yeast to make bread rise.
Fun Facts:
- About 99.9% of human DNA is exactly the same. It is the other 0.1% that codes for all of the differences that make each person unique.
- Humans shares about 98% of their genes with chimpanzees, 92% with mice, 76% with zebrafish, 51% with fruit flies, and 18% with E. coli bacteria.
- Some environmental applications of biotechnology include uses microbes to clean up an oil spill or fungal or algae outbreak.
Landmark:
- A 14-year-old boy with type 1 diabetes called Leonard Thompson is given the first medical administration of insulin. A second purified dose is successful. Leonard lives for another 13 years.
- Previously patients with type 1 diabetes would be put onto starvation diets and would have only months to live. Leonard lives another 13 years before succumbing to pneumonia.

- The efforts of Biotechnology companies will improve quality of life for people around the world with California’s 3,400+ life sciences companies, world-class universities and biological research institutes leading the way.
Economic Powerhouse:
- In 2017, life sciences company revenues topped $178 billion in California, and more than 311,000 Californians were directly employed throughout the sector.
- When indirect and induced employment is added—jobs that support and are supported by the sector—the total is 958,000 people employed by the industry in California.
